New: Photo Tagger Enhancements

New: Photo Tagger Enhancements

In August 2022 we introduced Photo Tagger, a free feature that lets you easily tag multiple photos of the same individual in one go. It was first released on the MyHeritage mobile app and then extended to the MyHeritage website. We’re now pleased to announce new enhancements to this powerful feature: tagging suggestions are now accessible from additional key locations on the MyHeritage website.

Previously, photo tagging suggestions were only found on the dedicated Photo Tagger page, accessible from the “Photos” menu on the website or mobile app. Now, you’ll also be able to see and confirm tagging suggestions when viewing all photos featuring a specific person, or when reviewing photos one by one.

The new enhancements are available to all users who have enabled Photo Tagger and have received tagging suggestions. If you haven’t tried Photo Tagger yet, read our previous posts to learn how to use it on the MyHeritage website or on the mobile app.

Here are the additional places where tagging suggestions are now displayed:

The page showing all photos of a specific person

This page can be accessed in two ways: by clicking “View all” in the Photos & Video’s section of this person’s profile panel in the family tree, or by selecting this person under the “People” filter in the “My photos” section.

A new strip was added to the top of the page:

On this page you can easily confirm or reject additional tagging suggestions for this person.

The single photo page

Photo Tagger’s tagging suggestions are now accessible when viewing any individual photo from the “My photos” section of your family site. The suggestions appear in the right-hand sidebar as shown highlighted in green below:

If you click “No,” or select “Reject tagging suggestion” from the “More” menu, this tagging suggestion will be removed.

Once you have confirmed a tagging suggestion, it will appear in the list of individuals appearing in the photo.

Additional tagging suggestions on the photo page

It’s now possible to review all additional tagging suggestions for an individual who has already been tagged in a given photo. This option appears in the menu that opens when you click the three dots next to their name, as shown below highlighted in green.

Availability

Photo Tagger is a free feature, currently available on the MyHeritage website and on the free MyHeritage mobile app for iOS and Android. Tagging suggestions from the single photo page are currently available when using the MyHeritage website on desktop, but will soon be available for mobile web and on the mobile app.

Privacy

Privacy is a top priority at MyHeritage and is strictly protected. Tagging suggestions associated with a name are provided only for individuals who are marked as deceased in your family tree. In addition, Photo Tagger is available only to family site creators, and is not accessible to people you may have added as members or managers of your family site. Photo Tagger only works in the context of your own family site, on your own photos. It’s a productivity tool that lets you tag your own photos faster.

Before using this feature, users are asked to give consent so Photo Tagger can create facial recognition models for the people in your photos. You can withdraw your consent at any time through the site settings menu by clicking My Privacy > Content. If you want to opt back in, follow the same steps and click the checkbox to enable Photo Tagger, or visit the Photo Tagger page and accept the terms from there.

To maximize privacy, photo tagging suggestions are stored on MyHeritage temporarily. If you don’t access Photo Tagger and accept or reject any tagging suggestions for 3 months, all suggestions will be deleted. You can revisit the Photo Tagger page and have the tagging suggestions recalculated.
