New: Improved Family Tree on the MyHeritage Mobile App
- By Daniella

We’re excited to share that the family tree on the MyHeritage mobile app now has a fresh new look and stronger capabilities. These updates align the family tree on the mobile app with the redesign we previously introduced to the family tree on the web, making it easier and more intuitive to build and navigate your family tree on the go.
If you don’t have the MyHeritage mobile app yet, you can install it now for free.
Access your family tree on the MyHeritage app by tapping the tree icon on the bottom of the screen.
Here’s what’s new:
Vertical profile cards
The family tree redesign for the web included the introduction of vertical profile cards — an orientation that enables more cards to fit on the screen. A more condensed display reduces the need to pan around looking for individuals of interest. Vertical cards are particularly useful when navigating the family tree on a much smaller screen. That’s why we have made vertical cards the default option for displaying your family tree on the app.
Navigating the tree remains easy and intuitive: just swipe to pan the tree sideways or up and down, and pinch to zoom in or out.
If you prefer to switch back to horizontal cards, that’s easy to do — you can now customize your tree settings directly from the app.
Accessing tree settings
To customize your family tree settings directly from the mobile app, tap the Settings (cogwheel) icon on the upper right corner of the screen.
Under the settings, you’ll find the following options:
- Show icons for confirmed matches: By default, when you confirm all Smart Matches™ or Record Matches associated with a given person, the Smart Match™ and/or Record Match icons will no longer appear on their profile card. Enable this setting if you’d rather the icon remain visible even after confirming all matches.
- Show black ribbons for deceased people: This option allows you to easily identify deceased family members if you want to have a distinction between living and deceased individuals.
- Use color coding in Family view: Color coding is a handy feature that assigns a distinct color to each branch of your family tree. More on this below.
- Use solid card colors: The updated design differentiates between male and female cards with a subtle, thin color frame. If you prefer to switch back to the solid blue and pink cards, you can select this option.
- Show vertical cards: Unchecking this box will switch the cards back to a horizontal orientation. Changing this setting on the app will not affect how the cards appear on the web.
- Show cards for adding parents: By default, when the parents of a person in your tree haven’t been added yet, a special card will be displayed that lets you conveniently add a mother or father. Unchecking this option will remove these cards.
Color coding
Color coding is a useful feature previously added to the online family tree and to Pedigree view on the mobile app. It assigns a specific color to direct ancestors and descendants from a specific ancestral branch, making the relationships in your tree easier to understand at a glance. It has now been enabled for Family view on the app in addition to Pedigree view. The screenshots in this post are already color coded.
Generations slider
You can choose the number of generations shown in relation to the main person. To access the generations slider, tap the number to the left of the Settings icon on the upper right corner of the screen:
Tap a number to adjust the number of generations on display. If you want the tree to be less crowded, choose a smaller number of generations. If you want to see more generations, select the maximum, which is 5+.
You can also choose to hide the cousins of the main person by unchecking “Show cousins of main person.”
Conclusion
The family tree is typically the center of one’s family history research. This update makes the family tree on the MyHeritage mobile app slicker, adds new features, and better aligns the experience with the family tree on the MyHeritage website. Now all interfaces are smooth and consistent! We hope you enjoy these improvements!
