New: Relationship Diagram Now Supports Very Large Family Trees
MyHeritage is home to millions of family trees, and is proud to support trees of all sizes. Until now, there was one feature that did not fully support large family trees: the Relationship Diagram. The Relationship Diagram is a free feature that allows you to visualize your relationship to other people in your family tree and easily understand how you are related. However, on MyHeritage, distant family relationships in trees with over 10,000 profiles are displayed in the tree simply as “Relative” instead of a more specific description, and the Relationship Diagram was not available for these relatives until now.

We’re happy to share that the Relationship Diagram now supports very large trees, making it possible to see exactly how you are related to every person on your tree — even if it includes more than 10,000 people. You can access it from the profile panel in your family tree, or from an individual’s profile page.

Viewing relationships from your family tree

To view the relationship between yourself and a distant relative from your family tree, click on the profile card of the relative to open the left-hand profile panel.

The relative’s name will appear at the top of the panel, and beneath the name, you’ll see underlined text that says “Relative (View relationship)” marked in red below.

In a very large tree, it may take a few moments for the diagram to load. Once loaded, you’ll be able to see the full description of your relationship to this person at the top of the diagram (marked in red below), and beneath that, you’ll see a step-by-step visualization of the relationship path between yourself and this person. You can scroll down to view the full diagram.

You can also click the printer icon to download or print the diagram, or the pencil icon to open the diagram in the “Relationship report” feature. This feature is similar to the Relationship Diagram, but allows you to visualize the relationship between any two people in the tree, rather than just between yourself and a given person in the tree. It can also be accessed via the “Family tree” tab in the navigation bar under “More…”>Relationship report.

To ensure the Relationship Diagram is calculated correctly, you must be associated with the correct individual in your tree. If this is not the case, see this Help Center article for step-by-step instructions. Note that if you have more than one family tree, you can only associate yourself with one of them.

The Relationship Diagram is only accessible from the profile panel when viewing your family tree with the new design introduced in 2021. If you have chosen to stick with the classic design, you can visit the individual’s profile page to generate the diagram as described below, or switch to the new design under Tree settings>More actions>Switch to new design.

The Relationship Diagram can also be viewed from an individual’s profile page in a similar manner: by clicking “Relative (View relationship)” below their name at the top of the page:

We recognize and admire the significant investment and commitment it takes to build a tree of more than 10,000 individuals, and it’s important to us to provide features that will make managing such a robust tree even easier. We hope that MyHeritage users with very large trees find this update helpful.
