MyHeritage Adds 4.7 Million Historical Records in October 2023

In October 2023 we published 4.7 million historical records from 19 historical record collections from Lithuania, Sweden, the U.K., and the U.S. The records include marriage, death, burial, obituary, census, court records, wills, and household registers. Some of the collections also include images. Search them to discover a family treasure!

Here are more details about each of the collections.

England, Durham, Stockton-on-Tees Burials

This collection contains Poor Law records from Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland between the years 1837 and 1933. Records typically include the name of the individual applying for aid, place of birth, age and year and place of residence.

Due to an inability to support themselves financially, these individuals applied for aid from the parish. The elderly, orphans, widows, sick or disabled people, and those in poverty would usually be among those applying for aid.

Lithuanian-Jewish Household Registers from LitvakSIG, 1835-1946

This collection contains household register records pertaining to the Lithuanian-Jewish (Litvak) population during the Russian Empire and the period of independent Lithuania between the years 1835 and 1946. Records typically include names, date and place of birth, date and place of residence, and the name of the parents. Some records in this collection were kept for taxation or conscription purposes. Many of the original records have also been lost or destroyed. As a result, there may be significant gaps in the years available. The majority of records are from places in present-day Lithuania. However, due to various geopolitical changes during the time period of this collection, the records are not limited to the modern boundaries of Lithuania, and the places listed in records may also be located in present-day Poland, Belarus, or other neighboring countries.

Sweden, Blekinge, Medelstad Court Judgements

This collection contains court records (Domböckerna) from the district of Medelstad in Blekinge County, Sweden between the years 1668 and 1750. Records typically include the name of the individual involved in the case, and the date and place of the trial.

In those years, the court handled wage disputes, church attendance matters, illegal logging, incest cases, as well as boundary delineations, estate inventories, and transportation issues (skjutsning).

The Medelstad district was a district (Härad) in Blekinge County, Sweden that is now part of the Karlskrona and Ronneby municipalities.

This collection contains death records from Stockholm, Sweden between the years 1878 and 1926. Records typically include the name of the deceased, age at the time of death, and the date and place of death.

Pennsylvania, Chester County Septennial Census

This collection contains septennial census records from Chester County, Pennsylvania, United States. Septennial censuses occur every 7 years. This collection contains censuses between the years 1793 and 1863. Records typically include the name of the individual and residence information.

Starting in 1779, the State of Pennsylvania conducted an enumeration of taxable inhabitants every 7 years, listing the name, residence and occupation of the people. Those enumerations are called septennial censuses.

Examples

In the newly added Nebraska Deaths, 1900-1955 collection at MyHeritage, we’ve located a record for Grover C. Alexander, also known as “Old Pete,” who passed away on November 4, 1950, in Howard, Nebraska. Alexander was a celebrated pitcher in Major League Baseball, with a career spanning from 1911 to 1930 across teams like the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, and St. Louis Cardinals. His exceptional talent on the field led to his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1938.

We found a record for Chaim Grade, a notable Yiddish writer of the 20th century, in our new Lithuanian-Jewish Household Registers from LitvakSIG collection at MyHeritage. He resided in Vilnius, Lithuania, from 1931 to 1940. Grade’s contributions to literature, including winning the Itzik Manger Prize in 1970, mark his significant impact on Yiddish literature.
