In the newly added historical record collection 1890 Sweden Census, we uncovered an entry for Salomon August Andrée, a Swedish explorer best known for his daring yet ill-fated attempt to reach the North Pole in 1897 using a hydrogen balloon.

Census record for Salomon August Andrée from the 1890 Sweden Census

Along with two companions, he launched from Spitsbergen, but encountered severe weather conditions and drifted off course. Struggling with the extreme Arctic cold and dwindling supplies, the team perished, and their fate remained a mystery until their remains were discovered in 1930. His expedition stands as one of the most ambitious and tragic tales of early polar exploration.

As we can see from the record, Salomon August Andrée was living at Jakob Rote 7, Stockholms Stad, Sverige in 1890.

What makes this record particularly fascinating is Andrée’s occupation in 1890: Öfveringeniör (Chief Engineer). This shows that he was already deeply involved in the scientific and technical aspects of ballooning, which ultimately played a crucial role in his historic yet doomed attempt to explore the Arctic.
