Recreating family photos: Honoring our ancestors

Recreating family photos: Honoring our ancestors

Photographs are a great inspiration to see family similarities, past and present. Have you ever been told that you resemble an ancestor?

We often see old photographs and want to learn the stories behind the faces in our family tree. Christine McConnell decided to take this further and actually “become” her ancestors in a beautiful portrait series.

Honoring seven generations of women on her maternal lineage, Christine recreated these photos using herself and showed them side by side. The similarities are uncanny and demonstrate how family connections also extend to appearances.

Recreated photos can make family history come alive in the present, and are an interesting way to link to those ancestors whom we may have never met.

Preserving those photos are also important, and you can do that easily by uploading them directly to your MyHeritage family site.

I use software all the time to redo photos, but have never seen this method. I would be interested to learn to do this technique. I use old photos to put on cards, gifts and in scrapbooks.

Most are too dark to distinguish details & my computer can’t adjust lighting contrast…
    Sounds like a neat idea!!

I did a very similar project around the same time, but I posed as male relatives too. I also included stories about my relatives.

(We used a green screen, Photoshop, photographer and makeup person to do the project.)
