Example of what you could find in these records
Among the travelers listed in the new New York City Departing Passenger and Crew Lists, 1948-1956 collection is Walt Disney, who sailed from New York on June 15, 1951. He was the animator and film producer who, together with his brother Roy, founded the studio that carried his name, created Mickey Mouse in Steamboat Willie in 1928, and released Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, the first full-length cel-animated feature film. He went on to open Disneyland in 1955 and won 22 competitive Academy Awards, more than any other individual.
The record shows that he was 50 years old and living at 355 Carolwood Dr., Los Angeles, California, and that he sailed aboard the RMS Queen Mary, bound for Southampton, England, for a stay of two months. He travelled with his wife Lillian and their daughters Diane and Sharon for a summer in Britain, where his studio was producing its first live-action features, among them The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men.
Details like these, from the place of residence to the ship, the destination and the length of stay, show how departure lists can bring an ancestor’s journey to life.
