Australia Newspapers

This index of historical local, regional and national Australian newspapers, periodicals and gazettes includes MyHeritage’s advanced optical character recognition (OCR) of articles dating back to 1803. Every state and territory is represented, though the bulk of the collection consists of material from New South Wales and Victoria. Newspapers are a fantastic resource for historic and genealogical research as they can contain rich information about people in your family tree, through vital record substitutes such as birth, marriage, death notices and obituaries.

More information about the history of a community can be discovered through society pages and stories of local interest that can contain detailed records of activities and events and often provide more information about the persons involved, as well as the context of the times in which an ancestor may have lived.

France Deaths

This collection is a death index of French citizens and nationals released by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (French: Institut national de la statistique et des études économiques) abbreviated INSEE. The index contains each deceased person’s full name, gender, date and place of birth, and date and place of death. This index will be helpful to genealogists looking for more information about their French family members who passed away since the early 1970s.

The number of deaths reported and contained in this collection for the years 1970 and 1971 are well below expected counts and this is likely due to a ramp-up in compliance by local French offices reporting deaths to INSEE during these two years. In this collection the number of deaths reported for 1970 appear to be only about 8% of actual and for 1971 the number is about 50% of actual. By 1972 nearly comprehensive reporting was achieved across France and its territories.

While most of the birth places and death places are in France there are over 2.5 million records in this collection of persons who were born or died in other countries — with neighboring and nearby countries (such as Belgium, Germany, Spain, Italy, and Poland) and countries which were former French colonies (such as Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Madagascar, and Vietnam) being most common.

Northern Ireland, Wills and Administrations

This collection contains will and administration records from various Dioceses of The Church of Ireland in Northern Ireland. The vast majority of records date between 1621 and 1965, and typically include the name of the deceased, the date and place when the will was signed, probated or administered by letter or by bond, and the date of death.

From the late 17th century until 1857 the Church of Ireland (then the State Church) was accountable for testamentary administration. An estate was administered based on if the deceased had made a will, the value of the property they owned, and whether their property was located in more than one diocese. The records in this collection originated from the following Church of Ireland Dioceses: Diocese of Armagh, Diocese of Clogher, Diocese of Connor, Diocese of Derry, Diocese of Down, Diocese of Dromore and The Diocese of Kilmore.

New York, Passenger List Book Indexes 1906-1942

This collection contains records of passengers who arrived via ships to New York, United States between the years 1906 and 1942. Some passengers ended their journey in New York and others had other final destinations in the United States and abroad. Records typically include the name of the passenger, year of birth, year of arrival, and the name of the ship.

Early passenger lists were single-page manifests and recorded minimal information about passengers. Over time, forms were standardized and additional questions were added. By 1907, passenger manifests contained 29 columns and were two pages wide. The addition of names and addresses of relatives both in the United States and in the home country were also added to manifests starting in 1907.

A common omission for genealogists when dealing with two-page manifests has been to locate the first page and miss the existence of the second. This collection includes single joint images that have been stitched together, so that important information will not be missed.
