Examples

In the recently added Canada, Nova Scotia Births, 1836-1921 collection, we discovered an intriguing example: the birth record of Helen Creighton (1899–1989), a renowned Canadian folklorist.

Helen Creighton’s significant contribution to Canadian culture includes the collection of over 4,000 traditional songs and tales from across Nova Scotia, a vital preservation of cultural heritage.

Her Certificate of Baptism, found in this collection, is a window into her early life. It details her Christian name as Mary Helen, surname Creighton, along with her date of birth and baptism. Additionally, it lists her parents’ names and the city they resided in. The certificate, however, does not include information about godparents, which may not have been relevant in her case, and it also mentions the name of the officiating priest. This document offers a glimpse into the beginnings of a figure who would later become a key preserver of Nova Scotia’s folklore legacy.
