Historical Record Collections Added and Updated in the First Half of July 2023

In the first half of July 2023, we added 11 million historical records by updating 3 existing collections and added 6 new collections from France, Scotland, and the U.S. The collections include obituary, military, and census records. All of the French census records include images.

1911 France Census, Update

This collection contains the 1911 census records and images from a variety of departments in France. Records typically include names, year and place of birth, relatives in the household and residence information. Additional details can be found on each record’s associated image.

From 1836 until 1936 a national census was conducted every five years in France except for 1871 (which was delayed one year and conducted in 1872) and 1916 (which was skipped). Census records provide an excellent resource for finding ancestral family members living together and identifying their relationships, birth years, and birth places.

This collection contains the 1921 census records and images from a variety of departments in France. Records typically include names, year and place of birth, relatives in the household and residence information. Additional details can be found on each record’s associated image.

From 1836 until 1936 a national census was conducted every five years in France except for 1871 (which was delayed one year and conducted in 1872) and 1916 (which was skipped). Census records provide an excellent resource for finding ancestral family members living together and identifying their relationships, birth years, and birth places.

Scotland, Prison Registers, Update

This collection contains prisoner records from various prisons in Scotland, between the years 1791 and 1965. Records typically include the name of the prisoner, year and place of birth, residence, and the year and place of imprisonment.

Prisons in Scotland during the 19th and early 20th centuries were overcrowded and conditions were often poor. Prisoners were often required to perform hard labor and punishments could be severe. Children and women were also incarcerated, with particularly harsh conditions for child prisoners. However, there were also calls for reform throughout this period, leading to improvements in prison conditions and changes to the criminal justice system.

This collection contains obituary records from Cook County, Illinois, United States from the year 1933 onwards. Records typically include the name of the deceased, date and place of death, the date the obituary was published and the name of the newspaper where the original obituary was published.
