On April 1st, MyHeritage became the first commercial company to publish a full collection of the 1950 U.S. Census images. Additional releases are expected in the weeks ahead until the index is complete. Taken in April of 1950, the census encompasses the then 48 states in the continental U.S. and its territories: then Alaska, Hawaii, American Samoa, the Panama Canal Zone, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Alaska and Hawaii were later added as states in 1959. 150 million Americans were enumerated in the 1950 U.S. Census, an increase of 14.5% over the 1940 U.S. Census. The MyHeritage 1950 United States Census Index collection contains names, ages, locations, households, relations, genders, races, education, places of birth, and other details of those who were enumerated.
A gem from the 1950 Census
Among the records in the MyHeritage 1950 census image collection, you can find America’s beloved singer, songwriter, and performer Dolly Parton appearing in a U.S. census for the first time. Dolly’s father Lee and his wife Avilee, 29 and 26 years old respectively, then had 6 children. They lived in Tenessee’s Sevier County. Dolly (then written Dollie) was 4 years old at the census count and is the 4th child in the family. Her older siblings are her 9-year-old sister Willa D., 8-year-old brother David, and 6-year-old brother Denver. Her younger siblings are 2-year-old Bobby L. and newborn sister Stella M. Dolly’s father’s occupation is listed as farmer and her mother’s occupation is homemaker.
