Example
We found legendary actor Paul Newman listed in the newly added United States, World War II Navy Muster Rolls, 1938–1949 collection. Before he became a Hollywood icon, Newman served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
According to the record, Paul Leonard Newman enlisted on January 22, 1943, in Cleveland, Ohio, and appears on a muster roll dated May 31, 1944, under service number 7038.
Initially aspiring to become a pilot, Newman joined the Navy program at Yale University but was disqualified due to color blindness. He then trained as a radioman and rear gunner, serving in torpedo bomber squadrons in the Pacific Theater.
In a remarkable twist of fate, during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, Newman’s pilot developed an ear infection, grounding their aircraft. As a result, they were held back while the rest of their squadron was deployed aboard the U.S.S. Bunker Hill. Shortly thereafter, the carrier was struck by kamikaze attacks, resulting in significant casualties among the crew, including members of Newman’s unit. This incident left a lasting impression on Newman, who later reflected on the role of chance in his survival.
For his service, Newman was awarded several honors, including the American Area Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.
Another fascinating find in the newly added New York, New York City Air Arrivals, 1957–1962 collection is a record for Frank Sinatra. Born in Hoboken, New Jersey, Sinatra was already an international sensation by the early 1960s, known for hits like “My Way” and “New York, New York,” and his larger-than-life presence in music, film, and culture.
According to the record, Sinatra arrived in New York City on June 17, 1962, after departing from London. Around this time, he was balancing a busy schedule of performances and filming commitments. In June 1962, he had just completed a series of concerts and was preparing for major movie projects, including “The Manchurian Candidate,” which would premiere later that year. This arrival fits into a period when Sinatra was at the peak of his career, frequently traveling internationally for work, social engagements, and personal projects.
