5 Tips to Start Your Family History Research

Have you thought about what you’d like to accomplish this year in your family history research?

Here are some tips for a successful year in your genealogy journey:

1. Visit the towns of your ancestors. Organize a family trip this year and see where they lived, where they went to school, and other important places from your ancestors’ stories.

2. Any new births in the family? Update your family tree with new information. If you visit family, use the MyHeritage mobile app to edit your tree on-the-go.

3. Plan a family reunion, visit close family members, or plan to meet relatives you may have just discovered. Come prepared with questions to record their stories and anecdotes to fill in the gaps of your family tree.

4. Scan and digitize old photos or documents and upload them to your MyHeritage family site. Take new family photos at gatherings and add those as well to preserve and share those family memories.

5. Join a local genealogical society, or learn new tips to help organize your research. Take a look at our webinar library, to get advanced tips on advancing your family history research.

Would like to visit old homesteads and cemeteries, plan a family reunion, and maybe join a local genealogical society. But one goal which is high on my list this year: writing and compiling the stories of ancestors in my family tree. Finished one task over the holidays and drew up a nice tree chart with my husband that goes through our 3rd great-grandparents and hung it on the wall – that was fun and now we have an easy way to share with family. Happy New Year to all and may the year bring you answers to questions and a journey of discovery.
