Win a DNA Test for Mother’s Day! #momsdna

Each of us gets about half our DNA from our mother and half from our father, so it’s really no surprise that we can all think of characteristics and traits that we’ve received from our mothers.

Growing up, I always admired my mother’s sense of optimism. It didn’t matter what was happening in her life, she was always thinking of the best case scenario. She never allowed herself to be dragged into thinking about “what if?” The funny thing is that most of the time, things worked out just as she hoped and imagined. I like to think that her positive outlook has passed to me. I hope that, in turn, I will pass that on to my own children.

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, we want to hear about the best qualities you’ve inherited from your mothers. Whether it’s a sense of punctuality, or life lessons, our mothers’ DNA will always be with us. One lucky user will be chosen to win a MyHeritage DNA kit, to advance their family history journey.

We decided to kick off the competition by asking MyHeritage employees to tell us their favorite characteristics that they’ve received from their mothers. Watch the video with their answers here:

Ready for a chance to win? Share one trait that you’ve received from your mother in the comments below using the hashtag #momsdna. We’ll choose one winner and highlight some of our favorites in a blog post.

We look forward to reading your entries! How will you celebrate next week?

I always admired my mother’s strength. She pressed through many a difficult times, from pregnancy before marriage (with me), cheating & alcoholic husbands, 3 rambunctious kids, raising them without a responsible man many a times, working 2 full time jobs to put food on the table and now alzheimers. I hope I press through as gallantly as she does when faced with difficult days, I think I do, but I think she did it better.

I am adopted and have 2 daughters. Ive never met my biological mom. My aunt raised me after the only ‘mom’ I knew passed away when I was 11. So, I’ve been blessed with 2 women who were my moms, I’d like to believe that I carry empathy/understanding from my biological mom. I imagine no matter the circumstance, it may have been a difficult decision for her. By carrying empathy in my heart for others, I hope I honor her this Mother’s Day..just like all those before. Knowing who I belong to, what tribe I am from, where my footprints originated from would be an amazing gift not only for me, but for my daughters too. Thanks in earnest and warm regards to all celebrating moms.

I received many traits from my mum but the one that I think is the most beneficial to me is learning when to keep my mouth shut and to not interfere with my childrens parenting methods. They have to learn by their own mistakes.

I have three mothers, all I love very much and hold special meaning in my life. My biological mom I’ll spend time having coffee and bagels just enjoying valuable time with before it’s too late. My foster mom from years ago that made a huge impact on my life I will send a loving message to reminding her she is loved, appreciated and remembered. Finally, my mother-in-law whom recently passed away after being lovingly in my life for 25 years; I will spend some time helping her three daughters and my friends get through their first Mothers Day without her. In all this, I will be loved by my three children and they will learn the importance of moms.

I was adopted when I was a baby. For such a long time a didn’t have a clue of my origins, despite people always asked me if I am descendent from indigenous tribes, because of my looking. I still don’t know if the answer to this question is yes. But one thing I know I inherited from my mom is the courage to always look forward, not back.

I believe I’ve inherited my mom’s tenaciousness. She never gave up when it came to her family. She had severe arthritis but always took tare of us even if it meant crawling on her hands and knees and with 6 kids and a husband, it was allot of work. She was also selfless, always giving and very rarely receiving. I gave my first daughter up for adoption at birth but never gave up hope and we were reunited when she was 25. When my mom met her she said “Now that I’ve met you, I can die”. Freaked my daughter out, but that was my mom 🙂

My Mother has always been my best friend. She has shown love and caring for all those she has ever met. Although her childhood was difficult she never let it take her down. She always saw the positive in everyone. Now that she is 102 years of age, I now visit her often and she is always so happy to see us come. She is my mentor in life.

One of the best traits I inherited from my mother is perseverance. There were many set backs in my mother’s life that could have turned her life upside down with being overwhelmed but she persevered over and over again. She sadly passed in 2015 from breast cancer and I miss her every single day. No matter what comes my way, I persist with a courage I never knew I had. Thank you Mom!

    Happy Mothers Day!
Home is where the Heart (Mom) is!
A few years before my Mothers parents passed, I studied my Moms Spurrell Family History and learned that they came from a long line of Thanes/Barons, Judges/Sheriffs and Mayors/Principals, these are people you need to build a community. Community is what my mothers Ancestors represent which has descended to the Spurrells in Butter Cove, NFLD, where my Mom was born and raised. This was a small town built by her great Grandparents along with her Father who was a Fish Merchant. Butter Cove was filled with people who created their own food and shelter and living by building their own houses and catching fish. They provided themselves with the bare necessities using natural resources. The Spurrell Family Crest has a spur which means steadfast and two wheat sheaths meaning having plenty of to share. I hope I could live up to the family traditions and build a house and catch fish however I would rather inherit my mothers cooking skills or maybe I can settle for her Bookkeeping abilities. Thank you Mom for teaching me the Spurrell talents and way of life. I am happy to be your daughter who misses and loves you very much XO! #momsdna
