Example
One example record in the newly added France, Paris Reconstituted Civil Status Records, 1700–1859 collection is the marriage record of famed author Victor Marie Hugo and Adèle Julie Foucher. Victor Hugo, one of the most celebrated literary figures of the 19th century, is best known for his masterpieces Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.
This record captures a pivotal moment in his life: his marriage in 1822 at the young age of 20. Remarkably, even at that age, Hugo is listed as a membre de l’Académie des Jeux Floraux de Toulouse: the prestigious literary institution founded in the 14th century to promote poetry in French and Occitan. Known as the oldest literary academy in the Western world, its members have included luminaries like Voltaire and Chateaubriand — placing Hugo in truly distinguished company.
This unique document provides a personal glimpse into the early life of a man who would go on to shape French literature and national identity for generations.
