Christening: Welcoming a new baby

Prince George of Cambridge’s christening will take place today.

The christening of a new baby is a momentous occasion for many families. It’s a great way to welcome a new baby into the world and to celebrate their arrival with family and friends. Many religions have similar ceremonies with that in mind.

Traditionally, the ceremony includes appointing godparents for the baby. In the past, they were chosen based on the belief that the godparent would lead and guide the child in faith. Today, close friends or relatives are chosen to play an important role in the child’s life. It’s lovely for a child to have a close relative or family friend with whom they can have a close relationship while growing up.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have chosen to celebrate this event with a small affair of only the godparents and close family members.

They have chosen the Chapel Royal at St James’s Palace for the event, even though traditionally, the royal children, including the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge, were all christened in Buckingham Palace. The Chapel Royal holds important significance for the Duke, as it was where his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, was laid after her death, in front of the altar. The media is suggesting that this is the Duke’s way of remembering his mother at this important ceremony.

Three godparents have been chosen from the couple’s school days, and they’ll be choosing another two or three godparents.

However small the event will be, it is sure to be a very special and memorable occasion. It is the first time a monarch will be photographed with three heirs since Queen Victoria.
