Newspaper Name Index, USA and Canada — Updated

This collection is a structured name index extracted from existing free-text U.S. and Canadian newspaper collections on MyHeritage. Records typically include a person’s name, a snippet of text mentioning them in the newspaper, the newspaper publication title, date, and place of publication. Some records will also include additional searchable information such as the name of a spouse and the place of residence. Year range and place coverage in this collection vary greatly.

Names in this collection were extracted using machine learning technology and may contain mistakes due to Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology and automatic extraction. Users are encouraged to fix such mistakes using the “Suggest an alternative” feature that is available on every record page.

Searching this collection offers several major advantages compared to searching the free-text collections of these newspapers. Thanks to its structured name index, this collection supports synonyms in search results (e.g., it finds Andy when you search for Andrew, etc.) and it applies synonyms differently for first names and last names. It also allows searching for a person and their spouse, which is not possible in free-text collections. In addition, it leverages MyHeritage’s Global Name Translation™ technology so that searching in a foreign language such as Hebrew or Russian will return search results from newspapers in English.

Newspapers are an important resource for genealogy and family history research, as they contain obituaries and other vital record substitutes such as birth, marriage, and death notices. Additionally, society pages and stories of local interest contain rich information on activities and events in the community and often provide details about the people involved.

This collection will be updated further in the future and records will be added to the name index from additional newspapers.

1950 United States Federal Census

The 1950 census was conducted across the continental United States and its territories during April and May 1950. For all individuals, it includes names, ages, residence addresses, relationships, households, gender, birthplace, marital status, and other facts. All of the records include images and are free to access, view and save. The searchable index currently contains all records from Alaska, American Samoa, Delaware, Guam, Hawaii, Nevada, New Hampshire, Panama Canal Zone, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virgin Islands, Wyoming, Indian Reservation Schedules, and the overseas islands of Canton, Johnston, Midway, and Wake.

To bridge the gap until all the states have been released, MyHeritage utilized machine-learning and algorithmic techniques to create a free exclusive census AI index. First, the images of 150 million Americans appearing in the 1950 U.S. Census were scanned and the names were identified using handwriting text-recognition technologies. This technology, while powerful, can’t decipher every name accurately. MyHeritage then applied algorithmic techniques to remove names that appeared incorrect. The result is this index of 63 million names that were extracted with stronger confidence.

Though machine-learning and algorithmic techniques enabled us to analyze large volumes of data at record speed, the index is still considered very raw and contains mistakes. The records should be approached with caution and the linked census images should be reviewed to verify the information in every record.

In the weeks and months ahead, MyHeritage will continue to publish high-quality manually curated indexes state-by-state until the 1950 U.S. Census index is complete.

1939 Register of England & Wales, Updated

The 1939 Register of England and Wales was conducted on 29 September 1939. 1.3 million records were added in this update, bringing the total number of records to 34.4 million. For each household member the register records name, gender, address, birth date, marital status, place of residence, and occupation. This collection is an important census substitute for genealogists and family historians, as the entire 1931 Census of England and Wales was destroyed by a fire and no census was conducted in 1941. The 1939 Register is the most complete existing census-like collection for the population of England and Wales that covers the period between 1921 and 1951.

The 1939 Register was conducted similarly to a census and includes similar information. One important difference for genealogists is that the full date of birth is recorded in the 1939 Register for each person, whereas the traditional censuses conducted in England and Wales only record each person’s age.

The information in this collection was gathered under the authority of the National Registration Act of 1939, an emergency measure at the start of the Second World War. 65,000 enumerators delivered the forms ahead of the official registration day. On Friday, September 29, 1939 (National Registration Day), householders were required to record the requested information on the supplied forms. On the following Sunday and Monday, local enumerators visited every household, checked and gathered the completed forms, and issued identity cards to each of the residents in the household.

Of the 42 million individuals who are recorded in this collection, 6.9 million records remain closed due to privacy protection requirements, and about 700,000 additional records appear without full names. Records are closed for those individuals who were born less than 100 years ago unless matched to a registered death record. These closed records will be made public and added to this online collection on a yearly basis going forward.
