Kevin Bacon, who starred in well-known movies such as Footloose and Apollo 13, is also known for his plentiful social connections. So plentiful, in fact, that he became the subject of a game called “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.” The object of the game is to find a connection between a random actor and Kevin.
Embracing the concept of the game, Kevin started SixDegrees.org: a charity organization that aims to utilize the “small world phenomenon” to promote local and grassroots charities in the United States. Most recently, he launched a campaign called #IStayatHomefor to promote awareness of the importance of staying at home to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
Well, it turns out that Kevin is connected to another celebrity do-gooder in a deeper way: he is distant cousins with Ellen DeGeneres!
Ellen is best known as the host of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, a comedy talk show that combines interviews with celebrities, audience participation games, and human-interest stories. Like Kevin, Ellen has also supported many charitable causes, and often gives out generous prizes and donations on her show.
Ellen and Kevin are both descended from Sir William Jones and Elsbeth Herbert, who lived in Wales during the 15th century. Sir William was the standard-bearer for King Henry VII. Ellen is a descendant of their daughter Blanche Morgan, while Kevin is descended from their son, Reverend William Jones.
