Mother’s Day: Then and Now

As Mother's Day approaches, our research team took a look at what life was like for mothers a century ago and compared our findings to what life is like for mothers today.

Times were very different 100 years ago. In 1914, Babe Ruth made his debut with the Boston Red Sox, the first US bus line began and, on May 7, 1914, Mother's Day was officially recognized as a national holiday in the United States!

Here are some interesting facts:

  • In 1914, pacifiers, wooden carriages and baby bottles were around, but mothers didn't have the conveniences of disposable diapers or wipes.
  • One hundred years ago, over 95% of all US births took place at home. Today, home births account for less than 1% of all births. Continue reading "Mother’s Day: Then and Now" »

Mother’s Day 2014: Send us your selfies!

There's a famous saying -- “A woman becomes a mother when she gets pregnant, a man becomes a father when he sees his baby.”

Even from the first signs of pregnancy, a woman begins to hope, dream, and worry about her future offspring, and what the future will hold for them.

Mothers never stop thinking about their children. They shower their children with kindness, show off their talents and achievements to anyone who will listen, and always have the best hopes and dreams for their kids.

My mother is a remarkable woman. She is the most positive person I know, always bringing sunshine to every room that she enters.

Photos from the Past: Hidden Mothers

Photography is a great way to document our ancestors and to learn more about who they are, even just from their portraits.

Since the late-19th century, photography has become much more accessible and affordable for middle class families, yet taking a photo back then was a very different experience from today's.

A 19th-century photographer

Two centuries ago, there were no “instant” photos. Those posing for photographs had to remain in position - patiently - for five minutes to get the perfect image.

Honoring Our Mothers: Mother’s Day competition

Mother’s Day is nearly here. What better way to thank our mothers for everything they've done for us than by reflecting on all the wonderful mothers out there.

Mothers have a strong impact on our lives. Many even say that “mother knows best.”

Whether they are, in fact, our grandmothers, our aunts or our own mothers, all leave us with lasting impressions of the advice and wisdom they share.

Growing up, I remember listening to my grandmother recall her childhood, and learning about my own history. On my first day of school, I remember my mother's hug and her words of encouragement, reassuring me that everything would be OK. I know that - even today - I can always count on these great women in my family.

Mothers around the world have a huge influence on our lives. It's always important to show our appreciation for all they do. Continue reading "Honoring Our Mothers: Mother’s Day competition" »

Mother’s Day: Share your stories

As we approach Mother's Day, we focus our thoughts towards our mothers and think of ways to show our appreciation for all they do for us.

Mother’s Day is about reflecting on the special connection we have with our mothers and recalling the happy memories we share.

People say you learn to be parents from your parents. Does your mother share her mother’s characteristics or mannerisms? Do you?

On Sunday, May 13, (Mother's Day in the US), we'll be writing a special post, a tribute to all the mothers out there.

We'd like to hear from you as to what makes your mother special. Tell us in the comments below and we'll share some of your stories on the blog. If your story is published, send your mother the link. It's one of the many ways you could show her how much you care.

This is open to all, so please send us your story even if Mother's Day is celebrated on a different day in your country.

As my mother say's, every day should be Mother's day.
