MyHeritage During 2011

With the holidays over and 2012 in full swing, we’re taking a look back at the big news from MyHeritage in 2011.

For those who don’t remember what happened over the past 12 months - there were many major announcements – we’ve prepared a summary of the events:

25 January: Improvement to Smart Matches:

In January, MyHeritage released many changes to our market-leading Smart Matches technology. This helped make the process of discovering new family members - past and present - easier than ever before.

9 February: MyHeritage in 100 seconds

In February, we released a 100-second video demonstrating how MyHeritage works. Although meant to be a quick intro for those new to MyHeritage.com, even long-time users wrote to say it helped them learn about new features.

New feature: Automatic record search results

MyHeritage users now receive automatic record search results when browsing profile pages of family tree individuals.

Everyone at MyHeritage was delighted to welcome WorldVitalRecords.com to our family. See our blog post about the acquisition here. This allows MyHeritage users to benefit from World Vital Records and its database containing billions of historical records.

We have started integrating the two sites and, as a start, we've made it easier and faster for our users to view and access historical records from within MyHeritage.com.

If a MyHeritage family tree individual profile has record matches, a green button will appear in the top right corner. Click it and you'll get a breakdown of the records found.

MyHeritage acquires BackupMyTree.com

We're pleased to announce the acquisition of the popular family tree backup service, BackupMyTree.com.

This is part of our continued efforts to expand the range of family history oriented services we offer to our customers worldwide.

With the acquisition of BackupMyTree, we add a comprehensive free backup service renowned for providing peace of mind to genealogists around the world. Already protecting over nine terabytes of precious family tree data, we are sure that BackupMyTree will continue to grow in popularity.

BackupMyTree’s software automatically finds family tree files on your computer and then creates an off-site backup of your data. Other features include wide compatibility with major genealogy applications, anywhere access and multiple revision history - extremely useful if you update your family tree often.

The service is used by some of the world’s most experienced genealogists to complement and secure years of painstaking research for posterity.

At MyHeritage, we know just how important protecting data contained within our family trees is, which is why we introduced our own backup service around a year ago. There is little overlap between these backup services, and they complement each other beautifully. For those interested in the differences between BackupMyTree and the MyHeritage backup service, here is a useful comparison:

* Both services, once started, provide genealogists with ongoing, automatic backup of their family tree data without having to take any special actions.
* Both provide high value and high reliability and allow restoration of the latest version, or prior versions, at any point in time.
* Both services provide extra security by encrypting the backups.
* BackupMyTree is free, whereas the MyHeritage backup service costs $3/month.
* The MyHeritage backup service also protects photos and all other files referenced within the family tree, but BackupMyTree currently does not.
* BackupMyTree is a desktop backup service, backing up family tree files on your computer, from any major genealogy software provider.
* The MyHeritage backup service is an online backup service, backing up family trees you have on MyHeritage.com itself.

BackupMyTree is a welcome addition to our range of products and we look forward to maintaining the service and keeping it completely free.

This is actually the second company that we've purchased from serial entrepreneur Cliff Shaw, having acquired Pearl Street Software, makers of GenCircles.com and Family Tree Legends, in 2007. Cliff and his team are now shifting their focus to their latest venture, genealogy search engine Mocavo.com .

If you're an existing BackupMyTree user and have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact our friendly support team on our help center.

And for all our MyHeritage.com users - we'll be looking at ways for allowing BackupMyTree to benefit you in the near future.

Another language was added to MyHeritage.com this week. Your family site can now be displayed in 37 languages. As you’ll see in your language options, Latvian is now available.

With more than 92,500 Latvian users, we received many requests to add Latvian to MyHeritage.com.  We have great pleasure in finally being able to offer it as the first Baltic language in our list.

It should prove useful for users in both Latvia and Lithuania, making it a little bit easier to connect on MyHeritage.com. Continue reading "MyHeritage: Now in Latvian" »

Major improvements to Smart Matches™

We’re pleased to introduce a significant update of our Smart Matching technology. The new enhancements, unveiled on the website this week, include an overhaul of all Smart Matching pages, new collaboration features and easier management of Smart Matches, making this technology even more powerful and easy to use.

Smart Matching was originally acquired by MyHeritage.com from Pearl Street Software. We first released this innovative technology on MyHeritage.com in 2007, and have been improving it ever since. The technology matches between the people in your family tree and more than 680 million people in 17 million other family trees on MyHeritage.com. This can help you discover ancestors and relatives, by harnessing the vast collective knowledge of the 54 million registered users on MyHeritage.com. Smart Matches automatically find people from your tree in other trees, so that you and the other tree owners can learn from each other and also get in touch. The matching technology is sophisticated and bridges differences in spelling, phonetics and relationships that may exist between the trees, to locate as many matches as possible without sacrificing accuracy. Why is this so important? Because it can take just one Smart Match to bring a breakthrough in one's research and even change the life of a family, as you can see from many heartwarming user success stories that are posted here on the blog.

If you, dear reader, are not already signed up on MyHeritage.com, you can receive Smart Matches on your family tree for free. Go to http://www.myheritage.com and start a new family tree, or import an existing tree by uploading a GEDCOM file, and you will receive a notification on the discovered Smart Matches by email. We're sure you'll be intrigued by the results!

Let's dive in and look at the new improvements added this week in more detail.
