Major improvements to Smart Matches™

We’re pleased to introduce a significant update of our Smart Matching technology. The new enhancements, unveiled on the website this week, include an overhaul of all Smart Matching pages, new collaboration features and easier management of Smart Matches, making this technology even more powerful and easy to use.

Smart Matching was originally acquired by MyHeritage.com from Pearl Street Software. We first released this innovative technology on MyHeritage.com in 2007, and have been improving it ever since. The technology matches between the people in your family tree and more than 680 million people in 17 million other family trees on MyHeritage.com. This can help you discover ancestors and relatives, by harnessing the vast collective knowledge of the 54 million registered users on MyHeritage.com. Smart Matches automatically find people from your tree in other trees, so that you and the other tree owners can learn from each other and also get in touch. The matching technology is sophisticated and bridges differences in spelling, phonetics and relationships that may exist between the trees, to locate as many matches as possible without sacrificing accuracy. Why is this so important? Because it can take just one Smart Match to bring a breakthrough in one's research and even change the life of a family, as you can see from many heartwarming user success stories that are posted here on the blog.

If you, dear reader, are not already signed up on MyHeritage.com, you can receive Smart Matches on your family tree for free. Go to http://www.myheritage.com and start a new family tree, or import an existing tree by uploading a GEDCOM file, and you will receive a notification on the discovered Smart Matches by email. We're sure you'll be intrigued by the results!

Let's dive in and look at the new improvements added this week in more detail.

Good News for MyHeritage.com Users: More Smart Matches are on The Way!

A few months ago, as you’ll probably remember, MyHeritage.com completed a merger with the German family network group, OSN.

This change meant that several million new family trees from sites like verwandt.de, meusparentes.com, moikrewni.pl and others were added to our network, along with over 100 million profiles within those trees. The merger enabled former OSN users to make use of all of the technology at MyHeritage.com, but it’s also bringing benefits to existing users. Among those benefits are new Smart Matches within the significantly increased database.

Dutch network Zooof.com also joins MyHeritage.com

Last week we announced some big news about joining forces with German family site network OSN - news that has spread around the world by now.

Zooof logoThis week we're announcing a smaller yet important development, which is that we are now also welcoming all users of the Dutch family network ZOOOF.com.

Zooof.com is an Amsterdam-based international family network which has the vision to ultimately unite everyone in one family. Co-founder Jean-Paul Busker came up with the idea for Zooof.com in 2004 as a project to investigate the concept of ‘Six Degrees of Separation’ for families in the world. Partnering with co-founder and computer science expert Stefan Leenen, he launched ZOOOF.com later that year. And now they'll be joining their network with MyHeritage.com, so users can benefit from the technologies and features that our site has to offer.

Zooof is a great community with users from all over the world, even if their is a large part of Dutch users. The network has a really friendly spirit that impressed us and which we’ll do our best to carry over to MyHeritage.com.

Important for you is that as the site has a large contingent of Dutch users, which is strengthening the Dutch part of our Family Graph. That means that it will become easier for you to discover your Dutch ancestors and relatives through our Smart Matches™ because we have more data about Dutch genealogy now. After all, the history of the Dutch as explorers and merchants means there are people around the world with Dutch roots, so you may be amongst them!
