Millions of Irish Census Records Added to SuperSearch™

We've just added the 1901 and 1911 Irish Censuses, with over 8.7 million records, to MyHeritage SuperSearch™. Both censuses are free and include images. The collections represent an extremely valuable part of the Irish national heritage, and are a vital source for social, economic and cultural history.

Search the records now

The 1901 and 1911 Ireland censuses covered all of Ireland's 32 counties and enumerated the entire Irish population at the time. Although national censuses were taken every decade from 1821 to 1911, the 1901 census is the earliest complete census in existence; as most previous censuses were destroyed. The 1901 census was conducted on 31 March 1901 and the 1911 census was taken on 2 April 1911.

A Sneak Peek Inside the MyHeritage HQ

At MyHeritage, we're passionate about family, and our family-like work environment has always reflected this since our early startup days. To keep this atmosphere even as we expand, our offices have been designed to balance a fun and welcoming office environment, with a reflection of our commitment to the preservation of family history.

MyHeritage began in Founder and CEO Gilad Japhet's living room in Bnei Atarot, a village founded by the Templers. Then for several years the company's headquarters were located in a Templer family estate and farmhouse in the same village. This picturesque setting is where the company grew from 2 to 70 employees. The new Mac version joins our veteran Windows version available since 2005.

New Feature: Global Name Translation™ Technology

We’re delighted to announce the launch of Global Name Translation™, a new technology unique to MyHeritage, to help break through those language barriers in the quest to uncover your past.

Global Name Translation™ (Click to Zoom)

This innovation now makes it even easier to discover your global roots. The technology automatically translates names found in historical records and family trees from one language into another, at very high accuracy, generating all plausible translations, to facilitate matches between names in different languages. In addition, a manual search on MyHeritage's SuperSearch, will return results in other languages, automatically translated into the language of the query.

How can this benefit you? For example, perhaps your American family has Russian roots. Previously, you would have needed to search also in Russian to find all information available about your ancestors. Now you can search in English, and receive results in Russian, translated back into English for your convenience.

A search for Tatiana brings results in Russian with English translation (Click to Zoom)

The technology covers given names and surnames and can tackle names previously encountered in the past, in addition to new names not seen before. It also utilizes extensive dictionaries built by MyHeritage to cover synonyms and nicknames.

New Feature: Instant Discovery Tree Cards

Last month, we announced that Instant Discoveries™ are now available to all MyHeritage users, allowing our users to add entire branches to their family tree in just a few clicks. Many of our users have already been enjoying these Discoveries every day, and you can see this in near real-time using our exciting Discovery World Map.

Today we are introducing a useful new feature that lets you see the Discoveries available for you right in your family tree, in their exact context. For example, if a branch connected to your great-grandmother, which includes her father or mother, is missing in your family tree, but found by MyHeritage in another tree, you’ll see a special yellow card above your great-grandmother’s profile labeled “Discovery!”

New Discovery Cards

Hover over the Discovery card to learn more about it: a tooltip will open describing the Discovery and specifying how many missing relatives it can add to your tree and the source of the information.

Hover over Discovery Card to display relatives found

Click on the yellow card to review the Discovery. Discoveries are always based on a match, so you will first be asked to confirm whether you think the match is correct. Continue reading "New Feature: Instant Discovery Tree Cards" »
