Video: MyHeritage at the UK National Family History Fair 2011

We often report back from the various family history and genealogy fairs that we attend around the world. Although the hours can be long, these fairs and conferences transcend the barriers of the internet and provide us with an opportunity to speak face-to-face with our users and potential users.

Recently, we attended the National Family History Fair in Newcastle, UK and today's short video shows the buzz around the MyHeritage stall during the day. Enjoy.

News from MyHeritage UK – 30 August 2011

The National Archives release more Security Service files...

This week the National Archives bolstered its current MI5 records collection by 171 records, bringing the total number of files available to approximately 5000. Spanning both the Second World War and post-war eras, there’s plenty of material to get your teeth into. Many of the files are available online at nationalarchives.gov.uk however; here are some of the most interesting additions...

Antonia Hunt (ALIAS) Tonia Lyon-Smith:- At the age of 15 Antonia was trapped in France by the German invasion on 1940. Instead of being sent to a concentration camp though, she was enlisted as an office girl by a Gestapo office in Paris. Prior to this, she was arrested by the very same Gestapo officers for a letter she had written on behalf of the resistance. In an amazing twist, the time spent at the office was overshadowed by the infatuations of a German officer named Karl Gagel. He even attempted to make contact with Antonia following her return to Britain! Continue reading "News from MyHeritage UK – 30 August 2011" »

MyHeritage: Now in Latvian

Another language was added to MyHeritage.com this week. Your family site can now be displayed in 37 languages. As you’ll see in your language options, Latvian is now available.

With more than 92,500 Latvian users, we received many requests to add Latvian to MyHeritage.com.  We have great pleasure in finally being able to offer it as the first Baltic language in our list.

It should prove useful for users in both Latvia and Lithuania, making it a little bit easier to connect on MyHeritage.com. Continue reading "MyHeritage: Now in Latvian" »

The new MyHeritage UK Community Manager

Since our previous UK Community Manager, Robert, has now flown from the MyHeritage nest, now is probably an excellent time to introduce our new, shiny and eager UK Community Manager, James.

So, I’m James your new UK Community Manager, I am based in London and I’m here to keep you up-to-date with everything happening at MyHeritage.com and to make sure that you feel at home, always.

I like to think of this blog as your opportunity to interact with us, so if you have any comments, a great family story or would just like to say hello then you can do so in the comments or on our twitter page (@myheritage) or even at facebook.com/myheritage.

I have spent most of the last few years working in Journalism and Marketing, but I also consider myself to be an amateur genealogist. I started researching my family history around 7 years ago using some (very) basic methods. Recently I placed my tree on MyHeritage.com and it quickly grew to 640 people from 400 using Smart Matches™. The next logical step was, of course, to join the team.

Family Festival: Catch the family spirit!

The first-ever "One Family, Many Faces" festival drew throngs of families to the MyHeritage workshop with 50 computers manned by a team of 15 experts.

This overwhelmingly successful experience in interactive multi-generational family history was attended by families of all backgrounds and ages and  took place at the Museum of the Jewish People, September 26-28, in Tel Aviv.

A record-breaking 1,500 family trees - adding some 32,000 individuals - were created at the three-day event. That count is now more than 40,000 because families are continuing to build their trees at full speed.

Parents brought babies, toddlers, young children and teens. Aunts and uncles arrived with nieces and nephews.

Grandparents brought their grandchildren so that they could share in the experience. Young children - to whom computers are an ordinary part of life - helped their non-technological grandparents.

Working side-by-side at computers were young couples just starting their lives together and senior couples recording details for their own parents and grandparents.

MyHeritage is all about uniting families, whether it is discovering new relatives or building a family tree together.

We spoke to several families and asked them why they were there:
