Most Popular Girls’ Names of the Past Century

Do you have an Isabella in your family tree? What about Ashley? According to a recent article in the Huffington Post these are two of the top 10 popular names in the United States from the past century.

Ever since the late 1800s, the United States Social Security Administration has been measuring the popularity of baby names.

The list includes:

  1. Mary
  2. Linda
  3. Lisa
  4. Jennifer
  5. Jessica
  6. Ashley
  7. Emily
  8. Emma
  9. Isabella
  10. Sophia

As you see in the list, some names popular for decades are now considered dated or vintage and are rarely used today. Other names from the past have come back into fashion.

The most popular female name in the list, Mary, has sometimes been ranked as low as 121 on the Social Security Administration list. It has also been ranked 41 at other times.

It is now trendy for parents to search for more unusual or traditional names. The most popular names for 2014 include four names from the top 10 list for the past century: Emma, Sophia, Isabella and Emily:

  1. Emma
  2. Olivia
  3. Sophia
  4. Isabella
  5. Ava
  6. Mia
  7. Emily
  8. Abigail
  9. Madison
  10. Charlotte
