Maxima Chan Zuckerberg: Promise of the next generation

Maxima Chan Zuckerberg: Promise of the next generation

How will your family remember you in 100 years? What are your hopes and dreams for the next generation? We recently wrote about the importance of recording family history and making an effort to leave your children and grandchildren with lasting memories.

Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan welcomed their new baby girl, Max, into the world last week. Judging by what they’ve already accomplished in the short time that they’ve been parents, they’re leaving her quite the legacy.

After announcing their daughter’s birth, the couple pledged to donate 99% of their Facebook stock, worth about $45 billion, to fund the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. The initiative’s goal is to try to “advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation.” It will begin by focusing on “personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities.”

In an open letter to baby Max posted on Facebook by the new parents, they described their joy and happiness at her arrival, and their hopes and dreams for her future.

Your mother and I don’t yet have the words to describe the hope you give us for the future. Your new life is full of promise, and we hope you will be happy and healthy so you can explore it fully. You’ve already given us a reason to reflect on the world we hope you live in. Like all parents, we want you to grow up in a world better than ours today.

When we look back at the lives of our parents, grandparents, and previous generations, we can compare our lives to theirs, see how far we’ve come, and the progress made. It is imperative to preserve family history and capture memories for future generations, to give our descendants an idea of what our world was like in our time.

In the words of Mark and Priscilla:

We can’t wait to see what you bring to this world.

What world do you envision for your children and the next generation?
