I found my earliest ancestor by looking up the genealogogy facility on MyHeritage.
It appears that he is a direct descendant of the Holy Gerlacus who went to live in a hollow oak tree in Houthem, a small village not far from Maastricht in the Dutch province of Limburg. He died in 1170 and was later declared a saint by the Pope of the day.
The ancestor I have at present dates back to the 1500's and I am getting closer and closer to establishing a direct link back to St Gerlacus.
I have found this a very rewarding journey, as along the way I came across several direct descendants that I had never heard of.
My relatives are also thrilled with the results.
Wish me luck with my further research?

What a wonderful description of the genea - journey. It really sums up the experience of the journey. My journey has been fascinating. Have found so much did not know and cousins did not know or lost touch with. The journey has also taken us to places that our pioneer ancestors camped in, built railways, tramways and buildings in. Have found that what began as dabbling to leave some of the story for family has ended up an exciting and complulsive journey - who knows where we are going but it is sure interesting.

I loved reading your blog. My journey has been a wonderful experience. I hope my grandchildren will someday enjoy their trip through history as much as I've enjoyed looking up the roots of the family my husband and I have combined. Thank for your thoughts.
