My daughter in interested and so is my Grand daughter (8yrs old) and when she had to do her "star of the week" poster in 1st grade she wanted to do a family tree so we did one on posterboard and her class thought it was interesting. Now to get my son and other grandchildren interested would be great!!
We even go to the cemetery where their great grandparents are and she will write down other people's names and dates in a notebook. Both her and her brother (6 yrs old) enjoy doing that.

I like to take my children and grand children to nearby areas where they can see where their ancestors lived. I also show where they are buried if possible. I regularly try to get in a story and mention distant cousins they don't realize are related.
