An America of Another Time

Occasionally online, we fall upon a small unpretentious site that unearths something wonderful. Old Pictures is just this kind of site, based out of the US this site has a vast collection of historic photos dating from the 1850 to 1940.

The site offers historical photos that detail an almost forgotten cross-section of American history and offer a unique perspective on a long ago time. The photos are thematically classified, and the site offer galleries of photos for different legendary periods, ie. The Crimean War,  American History 1900-1930, Daguerreotypes, etc. Lovers of old photos will be simply knocked out!

The site’s author has created a section titled Defining Moments to address his idea that it is the monument moments that largely define the breadth of history. Fortunately we have some of these moments immortalized and rendered so perfectly in beautiful photographs!

One final note about this cool site is there is a great section called Historical Maps, which has beautiful photos of maps dating back to the 1500s.
