Barack Obama's ancestry never ceases to amaze. Over the past year we've heard of his Irish roots, his ancestors from the Luo tribe in Kenya, and his unexpected 8th cousin, Dick Cheney. This week even more has been revealed about his family tree, from the unlikely research of a seventh-grade schoolgirl.
BridgeAnn d'Avignon, pictured here, from Monte Vista Christian School in California, has made some startling discoveries about Barack Obama's heritage. With the help of her 80-year-old grandfather, who has been researching presidential genealogy for six decades, BridgeAnn claims to have discovered that Barack Obama is related to every single American president in history except one, Martin Van Buren.
According to her research, all of these presidents have genealogies which can be traced back to John 'Lackland' Plantagenet, an English King from the Middle Ages. King John is remembered for signing the Magna Carta in 1215, and was known throughout old English folklore as Robin Hood's sworn enemy. As an English Royal, he might have expected his dynasty to continue for some time, but even he would be surprised to know that his descendants are still world leaders well into the 21st century.
This is yet another example of how unearthing our past leads to discoveries we could scarcely imagine. If you want to see a little more of Obama's background, why not take a look at our record of his family tree here? Or, if you're feeling more adventurous, why not start tracing your own roots a little further? You never know where your search might lead.
